BELFAST CITY COUNCIL SET TO SUSPEND X USE OVER AI DEEPFAKE CONCERNS

  • February 08, 2026

ABelfast City Council looks set to suspend its use of social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, following recent concerns over its AI tool Grok. The council's strategic and resources committee on Friday decided it should "suspend posting on its account and signpost followers towards the council's other social media channels" . The decision is subject to ratification at the next full council meeting on 2 February.

Some Northern Ireland Executive departments have said they are keeping "under review" their subscriptions to X.

The platform is being investigated by the UK regulator Ofcom after widespread concern Grok was being used to create sexualised deepfake images.

BAHRAIN FINTECH BAY AND TETHER SIGN MOU TO PROMOTE BLOCKCHAIN ADOPTION

Bahrain FinTech Bay, the Kingdom’s leading fintech hub, and Tether, the largest company in the digital asset industry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance blockchain adoption, enhance digital asset education, and position Bahrain as a regional leader in blockchain innovation.

The collaboration is supported by the Kingdom’s new, forward-thinking stablecoin regulatory framework. This framework, recently introduced by the Central Bank of Bahrain, is aimed at ensuring the safe and sound integration of stablecoins into the financial system. It establishes clear legal classifications for different types of stablecoins and sets out detailed requirements for licensing, reserve management, asset segregation, and real-time attestation obligations.

Accelerating education and innovation

Through this collaboration, Bahrain FinTech Bay and Tether will work to accelerate the use of blockchain technologies by promoting education, supporting community engagement, and encouraging greater cooperation between public and private sector stakeholders.

Grab brings robotics in-house to manage delivery costs

Rising labour costs and tighter delivery margins are pushing large platform operators like Grab to look at automation. It’s moved to bring robotics capability in-house by its acquisition of Infermove.

Grab operates at a scale where small efficiency gains can have out-sized effects. Its platform supports millions of deliveries in Southeast Asia, many of them carried out by riders on scooters and bicycles in dense urban areas, producing complexity that limits how much automation could replace human labour. By acquiring a company focused on robots designed for unstructured settings, Grab sees physical-world AI as mature enough to use in cases outside pilot programmes. Delivery automation close to core operations Rather than relying on off-the-shelf systems, Grab is opting to internalise the development loop. Infermove’s technology is designed to learn from real-world movement data, including information generated by non-motorised delivery vehicles. In practical terms, that means robots trained on how people actually navigate pavements, crossings, and crowded drop-off points, rather than how those spaces appear in simulations.
